Featuring Marcus Roberts, Rodney Jordan, and Jason Marsalis, the group plays originals and versions of standards that are full of surprises, yet somehow always accessible. Few groups manage to so constantly display creativity and virtuosity without at some point getting mired by uncomfortable or questionable abstractions, but the Marcus Roberts Trio, action-packed and always tasteful, is as solid as they come.
