Sunday Fun with The HyghEnergi Band Starring Marlon Spears

The Velvet Note continues its Sunday Fun series with the funky sounds of the HyghEnergi band from Birmingham, Alabama.

Producer/composer/pianist Marlon Spears has just completed his first solo project. The project, “Ridin'”, consists of eight original instrumental jazz compositions and two popular cover tunes that he has rearranged to add his own laid back, jazzy flavor. One of the original compositions on this album is “Greatness”, a tribute to Stevie Wonder, the main influence in Marlon pursuing a career in music.

Blind since birth, Spears has never allowed his disability to prevent him from doing anything he desires to do in life. He rode bikes around the neighborhood just like any other child. Marlon became a certified scubadiver while in college, and is now the sole proprietor of SpearSound Productions.

Marlon Spears is an alumnus of Daniel Payne Middle School, where he first began to prove that his ability to achieve success was just as attainable as anyone else in his class. He attended Ramsey High School, where he graduated with honors, and went on to graduate from Lawson State Community College, after which he majored in Music Technology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned a degree and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Spears has opened for artists such as Deborah Cox, Clarence Carter, Michael McDonald, Foxy Brown, and various others. He has also played with the Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble in New York.

Showtime: 7:30 Admission: $25.
