In continuation of his acclaimed Legends of Jazz series, The Justin Varnes Quartet plays tribute to the music of trumpeter Clifford Brown.
Also known as “Brownie”, Clifford Brown was an American jazz trumpeter who died at the age of 25 in a car accident, leaving behind only four years’ worth of recordings. He influenced later jazz trumpet players including Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan [3]. He was also a composer of note: two of his compositions, “Joy Spring“[4]and “Daahoud“,[5] have become jazz standards and Brown won the Down Beat critics’ poll for the “New Star of the Year” in 1954.
Justin Varnes will explore the music, as well as the impact that Clifford Brown’s life influences had on his musical legacy. It’s like taking in a concert and taking a jazz history class at the same time, and…
…oh, and they’ll also play their behinds off!
