Alvin “Stone” Maddox was born in the cotton country of Shelby, NC, the son of loving parents who had suffered multiple miscarriages prior to his miracle birth. He began singing at the tender age of 4 years old, accompanied by his mother who served as the church pianist.
As a sideline to his lifelong career as a claims adjuster for a large insurance company, Alvin has performed at various events throughout the US and abroad, including, most notably, his vocal performance with the late, legendary Mulgrew Miller at NYC’s Jazz Standard in 2013.
Alvin’s vocal style is characterized by his rich, powerful baritone, his dramatic phrasing, his distinguished delivery and his innate ability to envelop his audience in the experience of the song. He considers music as a “healing source” and his soulful contribution is always offered with the disclaimer, “It’s not about me…it’s about the music. The bottom line is, I’m just a country boy who loves to ‘sang’!”
