Trumpeter Daniel Terence Harper

Daniel Terence Harper graduated from Rutgers University as a classical trumpet major in 2009, where he studied under William Fielder, who has been regarded as one of the greatest trumpet instructors of his generation. Terence started playing the drums at the age of two and at twelve years old began playing the trumpet. While in middle school, Terence began playing the drums for one of the Spellman College Jazz ensembles under the direction of Joe Jennings, while also being featured on a recording with the Inman Middle School jazz band on both trumpet and drums.

Harper attended North Atlanta High School Center of the Performing Arts and played trumpet in both jazz band and symphonic band under the direction of Mr. Reginald Colbert. While in high school, Terence started to focus more on both classical and jazz trumpet and has won numerous auditions during his high school term including the Georgia Music Educators Association All State band, principal trumpet for the district honor band, The Talent Development Program and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony at Emory University. Terence has also attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts camp in Michigan and has also taught trumpet performance and jazz studies at Summerbridge Atlanta at the Lovett School.

Rutgers University was where Terence continued to pursue his classical trumpet performance studies. Terence placed 1^st chair principal trumpet in the Rutgers University Symphonic band and performed and recorded with the Graduate Grammy nominated Rutgers Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. William Berz. Terence was also the recipient of the Korean Grocers Scholarship for academic achievement and outstanding musicianship. Terence has taught privately while attending college and was invited by Blue Note Jazz recording artist Sherman Irby to teach at the Jazz Masters Workshop in Brooklyn, NY.

After graduating from Rutgers, Terence relocated to Atlanta, GA where he teaches both privately and publicly. Terence occasionally teaches music with the Atlanta Music Project. Harper continues to freelance and performs constantly throughout the country. Currently, Mr. Harper performs weekly at the premier Jazz club of Atlanta, Churchill Grounds. Daniel Terence Harper is also currently studying theory and composition with his Father Danny Harper, who is a nationally known and respected music educator at Miles College and also composer and arranger for The Harper Brothers group on Verve record label. Terence has appeared on numerous radio stations in Atlanta including WCLK and WRFG of Atlanta.

On October 2012, Terence Harper and his quintet were invited to perform for Jessie Jackson’s Rainbow Push event and performed for the Rev Jesse Jackson Sr, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Senator Gale Davenport, Demetria Mckinney and a host of others. Terence’s group also had the honor of performing for the Atlanta City Council at the 6th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Recognition Banquet.
