First released at a sold-out show at the Velvet Note, the debut recording of original music by award-winning saxophonist Chris Otts, guitarist Patrick Arthur, and drummer Dana Fitzsimons, titled The Cheap Ensemble, went on to earn critical acclaim and was played on over 175 jazz radio stations around the world. The group returns to the Velvet Note, augmented by pianist and composer Bill Graham, to celebrate the music of legendary drummer and composer Paul Motian. Motian was an integral part of the famous Bill Evans Trio and essential avant-garde jazz groups with Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition to pioneering a unique and sensitive drumming style, Motian was a prolific composer of highly original, expressive, and lyrical music that the group will perform on this special night.
