Young Guns Series:  Jazz Pianist Andres Rovira

Andres RoviraAtlanta native Andrés Rovira began keyboard lessons at age 5. Interest in Jazz emerged at age 7, and at 8 he began Jazz piano studies with Phil Sims, co-founder of the Community Music Centers of Atlanta.  At 14 he was fortunate to secure a spot on Kevin Bale’s teaching calendar, alongside some of Atlanta’s top professionals.

A 2014 graduating senior from Paideia High School, Andres has played with the Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra’s Big Band and Small Ensembles, led by Dr. Gordon Vernick of Georgia State University. He has been selected as the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Band pianist for the past three years, and was selected Jazz pianist for the 2012 Georgia Governor’s Honors Program.  In 2013 Andrés won the Robert Glasper “Best New Pianist” award and he won a “High School Outstanding Performances” Award in the Jazz Soloist category as a part of DownBeat Magazine’s 2014 Student Music Awards.

With a well-documented performance career on YouTube, Andrés has been busy playing around Atlanta.  He is a frequent sideman and has led jams and bands such as The Majestics, a band that specializes in charity gigs at hospitals, assisted living facilities and rehab centers.

In trying to learn from the best, Andres frequents Jazz jams from Atlanta to Washington DC and as far away as Barcelona and Valencia, Spain.

Andrés is grateful to have found himself in a city with mentors like he’s had, and a venue like The Velvet Note, which prides itself in discovering and providing opportunities for emerging talent.  Despite that, in September he’s on his way to new challenges at Columbia University and the New York Jazz scene.
