SUMMARY:Friday\, June 26th: The Michelle Malone Duo SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:*** SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! Catch the LIVESTREAM at 7:30pm.. Go to https://thevelvetnote.com/live-stream \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Malone’s musical roots run deep and wide like the mighty Mississippi river\, twisting and turning through rock\, blues\, and Americana territory. Her music is influenced by the red dirt rhythms from her Georgia home – blues\, soul and rock and roll. “Malone is a master at mixing blues and Americana music” (GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE). Over the course of Malone’s 25+ year career\, she has shared stages with artists from Gregg Allman to Indigo Girls\, Albert King to Mississippi All-Stars Luther Dickenson\, Bon Iver to Brandi Carlile\, released more than 15 records so far\, and continues to gain respect from her peers. Her latest\, Slings and Arrows\, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard Blues charts\, proves that her slide guitar chops are “outrageously good\, a real revelation” (NO DEPRESSION). Her powerful live show will take you on a journey from dirty back roads of the deep slow south to frantic bright city lights\, regardless of whether she’s performing solo or armed with her electric guitar and her mighty fine band. Michelle “has the soul of a bluesman\, the heart of a folk singer\, and the guts of a rock and roll star wrapped up in one fiery bad ass” (NASHVILLE RAGE)\, and she’s “uniquely able to blow the roof off the place then turn right around and whisper a soft song that will break your damn heart” (PASTE). Her live shows are upbeat and jubilant\, engaging and satisfyingly soul stirring\, flush with the raw energy and emotion that’s always been a part of her signature sound.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!!

SUMMARY:Singer and Actor Tony Hightower
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 13th & Saturday\, March 14th\n\n\n\nShowtime: 7:30pm and 9:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTony Hightower was born into a musical family. His mother is Theresa Hightower\, the Atlanta based Soul to Blues to Jazz singer. Tony says that growing up with his mother\, who raised him as a single mom\, meant he went to all her shows and was exposed to many of the finest musicians in town. He says\, “whatever you are around is going to be an influence.” A lot of what Tony was around growing up was jazz. \n\n\n\nHe got his first professional gig at 14 as a drummer and had a record contract as part of the neosoul group 4.0 right out of high school. He toured with the group for the next five years. He said he fantasized that “one day I’m going to make a record like Nat King Cole and perform in a tux holding a brandy snifter.” \n\n\n\nTony’s dream is coming true. \n\n\n\nBut Tony does more than sing–he writes some of his songs in the style of old standards at the suggestion of his mentor Freddy Cole. He has performed on stages around the world\, including the Atlanta Jazz Festival and the prestigious High Museum.  As a record producer\, he has worked with Outkast\, Goody Mob and Lionel Ritchie. Tony is the voice you hear on many commercials including ones for Coca Cola\, Kroger and the Georgia Lottery\, and as an actor\, Tony has now toured with five of Tyler Perry’s plays.

SUMMARY:The Billy Thornton Band
DESCRIPTION:Billy Thornton was brought up in a family of musicians in South Georgia\, Tifton to be specific. In the midst of farms\, pickup trucks\, and country music\, Billy and his brothers went against the grain\, learning all of the alternative rock radio hits\, playing them in any coffee shop that would let them (there was only one). With their father\, they played jazz and smooth hits at restaurants and country clubs\, and at 17\, Billy fell in love with the acoustic jazz of the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is this passion for music from all genres that has kept Billy a top call sideman bassist in the southeast for the past 15 years. \n\n\n\nAs an upright bassist\, Billy has been known to “steal the show” with his rhythmic slapping\, melodic bowing\, and expert facility as a soloist. But now he has found his voice. Literally. \n\n\n\nAs a vocalist\, he aspires to honestly portray his emotion of the moment\, sharing his nostalgia for the music while incorporating a jazz musician’s sense of freedom of harmony and rhythm. Billy’s jazz-style arrangements of pop and rock songs from the past four decades mix easily with jazz standards\, surprising his listeners at times. His renditions of song from Nat King Cole to Britney Spears inspire audiences\, transporting familiar favorites to new places of delight. The song selection vacillates easily from contemplative to whimsy\, tender to raucous; all while maintaining integrity to self and the music.   \n\n\n\nAlso featuring Kevin Bales on piano and Darren Stanley on drums.

SUMMARY:Joe Farnsworth Presents...Pianist Eric Reed
DESCRIPTION:When you think of hard-driving swing\, daring expression\, sophistication and elegance in artistry\, formidable technique and a thunderous sound\, there are only a small handful of pianists you think of and one of them is most assuredly ERIC SCOTT REED. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric was born in the musically rich city of Philadelphia\, PA. He grew up playing in his father’s storefront Baptist church: “My father was a minister who sang with a Gospel group called the Bay State Singers; he was my earliest musical influence. I was also hit heavily by everything I heard on the radio – James Cleveland\, Edwin & Walter Hawkins\, Andraé Crouch\, Donny Hathaway\, Earth\, Wind & Fire.” Soon after\, young Reed was bitten by the Jazz bug after hearing recordings by Art Blakey\, Ramsey Lewis and Dave Brubeck.  \n\n\n\nBeyond playing the piano\, Reed expanded his scope to Hollywood\, composing and arranging music for the Eddie Murphy comedy\, Life\, various other independent projects for Fantastic Four director and high-school chum Tim Story\, plus commercials and TV spots. Annually\, he serves as musical conductor for choreographer Alvin Ailey’s classic Revelations with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, under the direction of Judith Jamison. An ardent educator\, Eric served on the faculty of the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. He continues to perform worldwide master classes that cover the full spectrum of Jazz history and discography. \n\n\n\nABOUT JOE FARNSWORTH \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoe Farnsworth is the host of The Velvet Note’s series of “must see now” jazz artists that bears his name. One of the most highly regarded jazz drummers on the scene today\, Joe is known for his blazing speed\, precision\, musical\, and melodic playing.  \n\n\n\nBorn in South Hadley\, Massachusetts in 1968\, Joe grew up in a musical family; his father was a music educator and he has four older brothers\, two of whom became professional musicians.  \n\n\n\nHe studied with Alan Dawson and Arthur Taylor prior to attending and graduating from William Patterson College in New Jersey in 1994 where he began playing with saxophonist\, Eric Alexander and guitarist\, Peter Bernstein. \n\n\n\nUpon moving to New York City\, he led the weekend jazz combos at Augie’s (now Smoke Jazz & Supper Club). He performed with Junior Cook\, Cecil Payne\, John Ore\,  Big John Patton\, Harold Mabern\, Eddie Henderson\, John Jenkins and his brothers\, John and James.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA child prodigy born with a God-given gift\, Eric started playing piano at the age of two and began private studies by the age of seven at Settlement Music School. However\, he remained primarily self-taught\, often confounding his instructors not by learning the written music\, but listening to them play it first and memorizing musical pieces note-for- note: “I wasn’t interested in practicing Bach; I was too busy digging Horace Silver!”  \n\n\n\nBy age eleven\, his family moved to Los Angeles and he continued his formal instruction at the Colburn School (formerly the Community School of Performing Arts) where his theory teacher\, finally realizing that Eric was destined for swinging\, turned him onto more recordings of great Jazz pianists.
