SUMMARY:Sunday\, August 16th: Seven-String Jazz Guitarist Taylor Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Taylor Roberts is one of those rare guitarists whose artistry transcends genre while remaining deeply rooted in the language of jazz. A master of the seven-string guitar\, Roberts blends breathtaking technique with warmth\, lyricism\, and an unmistakable sense of melody\, creating performances that are as emotionally engaging as they are technically dazzling. Although jazz is at the heart of his playing\, his musical vocabulary stretches effortlessly across blues\, R&B\, pop\, rock\, and the Great American Songbook\, allowing him to connect with audiences of every background. His distinctive style has taken him to international stages\, multiple appearances at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival\, and nearly a decade as the featured in-house entertainer at The Ritz-Carlton\, Amelia Island. \n\n\n\nWhether performing intimate solo arrangements or leading an ensemble\, Roberts has earned a reputation for transforming familiar songs into fresh musical experiences while bringing sophistication\, soul\, and spontaneity to every performance. Having studied with acclaimed educators Barry Greene\, Keith Javors\, and Bunky Green\, he combines a lifetime of study with the effortless communication of a seasoned performer. The result is a concert experience that is both virtuosic and deeply personal—one that reminds audiences why live jazz remains one of the most compelling art forms in the world.

DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. Michael Burton is an acclaimed saxophonist\, producer\, and educator known for his soulful\, genre-blending sound across jazz\, R&B\, and gospel. A native of Jackson\, Mississippi\, he was raised in a musical household that shaped his expressive tone and artistic foundation from an early age. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Jazz Studies from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music\, where he studied under legendary educator David Baker and performed with the IU Soul Revue. \n\n\n\nOver his career\, Burton has performed with icons including Aretha Franklin\, Mary J. SUMMARY:Russell Gunn + Blackhawk
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. Two-time GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter\, composer\, arranger and producer Russell Gunn returns with one of his most ambitious statements yet: Afrikan-Amerikan Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth By Any Means Necessary\, a provocative seven-song work that draws inspiration from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead and reimagines the idea of a spiritual guide through the history\, identity\, resilience and forward movement of Black Americans. Featuring six original Gunn compositions and a Duke Ellington classic\, the project brings together the fearless musical language that has defined Gunn’s career—jazz steeped in the Black musical continuum\, alive with gospel\, funk\, hip-hop\, groove and uncompromising improvisation. The album also introduces Blackhawk\, Gunn’s hand-selected ensemble whose name pays tribute to Miles Davis’ legendary In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk\, the recording Gunn credits with profoundly shaping his understanding of how jazz should feel. At its heart\, however\, Afrikan-Amerikan Book of the Dead is not a meditation on death\, but an affirmation of life: music concerned with knowing who you are\, understanding what came before you and moving forward with purpose\, pride and possibility. On October 16 and 17\, The Velvet Note Signature Series welcomes Russell Gunn + Blackhawk for an extraordinary album-release weekend\, placing this powerful new music exactly where it belongs—in an intimate room\, just feet from the audience\, alive and unfolding in real time.

SUMMARY:The Velvet Note Signature Series: The Oz Noy Trio Starring Dave Weckl and Brian Charette
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM & 9:30PM. Every once in a while\, an opportunity comes along that reminds me why I built The Velvet Note in the first place. This is one of those weekends. Our Signature Series welcomes guitarist Oz Noy\, one of the most original voices in contemporary jazz and fusion\, joined by legendary drummer Dave Weckl and brilliant Hammond B-3 master Brian Charette. Individually\, each of these musicians has earned the respect of audiences and fellow artists around the world. Together\, they create something that’s spontaneous\, fearless\, and impossible to predict. It’s the kind of music that can only happen when extraordinary musicians trust each other enough to take chances—and invite us along for the ride. About the musicians: \n\n\n\n\nOz Noy\n\nInternationally acclaimed guitarist known for blending jazz\, blues\, funk\, and rock into a uniquely original style.\n\n\n\nHas performed and recorded with artists including Eric Johnson\, Mike Stern\, Richard Bona\, and Vinnie Colaiuta.\n\n\n\n\n\nDave Weckl\n\nWidely regarded as one of the most influential drummers of the modern era and a longtime member of the Chick Corea Elektric Band.\n\n\n\nMultiple Modern Drummer magazine award winner whose recordings and educational materials have inspired generations of drummers worldwide.\n\n\n\n\n\nBrian Charette\n\nGrammy-nominated Hammond B-3 organist celebrated for redefining the role of the jazz organ in contemporary music.\n\n\n\nHas performed and recorded with leading artists including Paul Simon\, Joni Mitchell\, Chaka Khan\, and many of today’s top jazz musicians.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes this event even more remarkable is where you’ll experience it. In most cities\, a trio of this caliber would be performing in a concert hall where you’d be watching from fifty or a hundred feet away. At The Velvet Note\, you’ll experience every note\, every smile\, every glance between the musicians from just a few feet away. That’s exactly what our Signature Series is all about—bringing internationally acclaimed artists into an intimate setting where the audience becomes part of the performance. If you love exceptional musicianship\, unforgettable moments\, and the thrill of hearing music that will never be played exactly the same way again\, I hope you’ll join us October 22nd\, 23rd\, or 24th. Seating is extremely limited\, and I fully expect these performances to sell out.

SUMMARY:Lori Williams Live!
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes: 7:30p and 9:30p. Lori Williams doesn’t simply sing a song—she inhabits it. An internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist with more than three decades of performance\, recording and music-education experience\, Williams brings a rare combination of sophistication\, sensuality and emotional truth to the stage. Her voice moves effortlessly from the elegance of traditional jazz to the warmth of soul and contemporary grooves\, and her career has taken her from celebrated jazz rooms and festivals across the United States to stages throughout Europe\, Japan and the Caribbean. Along the way\, she has performed and collaborated with an extraordinary roster of artists including Stanley Clarke\, Nathan East\, George Duke\, Peabo Bryson\, Norman Brown and Terri Lyne Carrington.  \n\n\n\nBut Lori Williams’ influence extends well beyond the microphone. A respected educator\, mentor\, songwriter\, producer and advocate for the music\, she currently serves as a Governor on the Atlanta Chapter Board of the Recording Academy—the organization behind the GRAMMY Awards. On Friday\, October 30th\, The Velvet Note welcomes Lori into one of the most intimate listening rooms in America\, where every breath\, every lyric and every beautifully bent note can be experienced up close. This isn’t background music. This is Lori Williams—close enough to feel every song.
