SUMMARY:Friday and Saturday\, December 9th and 10th: The Legendary Larry Carlton's FINAL WORLD TOUR
DESCRIPTION:****Purchase Tickets Below**** \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n2022 is Larry Carlton’s Final World Tour\, and he’s making a last stop at THE VELVET NOTE! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe impressive career of jazz guitarist Larry Carlton dates back more than 30 years. During the 1970s and 1980s\, Carlton served as a session player with some of the biggest and most respected names in the music industry\, covering a vast musical terrain. Although often referred to as a “smooth” jazz musician\, he aptly played everything from rock\, pop\, folk\, and jazz to country\, gospel\, and R&B. His credits include work with the likes of John Lennon\, Steely Dan\, Joni Mitchell\, Ray Charles\, Barbra Streisand\, and hundreds of others. At the height of his career as a session player\, he contributed to more than 500 recordings per year and\, in total\, played on more than 100 gold albums. He furthermore worked on numerous film and television soundtracks\, including the theme from the show Hill Street Blues\, which won a Grammy Award in 1981 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. \n\n\n\nAll the while\, Carlton gained recognition for his own work in the studio and on stage. After securing a major-label contract in 1977\, he recorded several solo albums and\, in March of 2002\, at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles\, won the prize with fellow guitarist Steve Lukather for Best Pop Instrumental Album for No Substitutions: Live in Osaka. \n\n\n\nLawrence Eugene Carlton was born on March 2\, 1948\, in Torrance\, California. He displayed an aptitude for music early in life. Picking up the guitar at the age of six\, he subsequently discovered jazz while in junior high school after hearing the album Moment of Truth by the Gerald Wilson Big Band\, featuring guitarist Joe Pass. As a high school student\, Carlton also gravitated toward players such as Barney Kessel\, Wes Montgomery\, and B. B. King\, as well as saxophonist John Coltrane. He was influenced in particular by Coltrane’s classic album from 1962 entitled Ballads. \n\n\n\nLawrence Eugene Carlton was born on March 2\, 1948\, in Torrance\, California. He was influenced in particular by Coltrane’s classic album from 1962 entitled Ballads. \n\n\n\nThroughout the early 1960s\, Carlton honed his skills playing club gigs and taking on occasional studio work in and around Los Angeles. In 1968 he released his debut album\, With a Little Help from My Friends\, which proved a success among critics and colleagues. Immediately\, the entertainment/media industry took notice\, and the young guitarist landed a job playing with a group of singers\, the Going Thing\, for radio and television commercials. In that same year Carlton toured with the group the Fifth Dimension. Then\, during the middle of his second year as a professional\, he was appointed musical director for the Emmy-nominated children’s television show Mrs. Alphabet. With this gig\, Carlton additionally displayed his acting skills as “Larry Guitar\,” the show’s co-star. \n\n\n\nBy 1970 Carton was regarded as a solid session player\, and his early studio dates included work for pop stars such as Vicki Carr\, Andy Williams\, and the Partridge Family. In 1971 he accepted an offer to join the legendary jazz/rock group the Crusaders\, remaining with the band until 1976. In between touring and making records with the Crusaders\, Carlton\, who released his second album\, Singing/Playing\, in 1973\, continued to contribute to the recordings of other artists. \n\n\n\nFeaturing: Larry Carlton (lead guitar)\, Barry Green (trombone)\, Gary Novak (drums)\, Ernest Tibbs (bass)\, Mark Stephens (keys)\, and Mark Douthit (saxophone).

SUMMARY:Friday\, December 2nd: Tony Hightower's Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Singer/Songwriter Tony Hightower is taking up the mantle to be a bridge that ushers R&B audiences into Jazz…Real Jazz. With years of experience as a musical performer and actor with familiar roots that place him firmly within the music’s firmament\, Atlanta-native Hightower is still just getting started on this benevolent turn in his journey. And he is bringing a lot of young people with him. \n\n\n\nHis sophomore project\, LEGACY\, finds Hightower exploring Jazz vocal stylings from a dazzling prism of angles. The 10-song album moves confidently and assuredly from original compositions such as the soulful scat-laced “All to the Good\,” the seductive Brazilian bossa nova of “Rendezvous” and the tender carnal Jarreau-esque love beg “I Need You” to swingin’ covers of Earth\, Wind & Fire’s classic Skip Scarborough-penned “Can’t Hide Love\,” a mean shuffle boogie groove through Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” and a smoldering upright bass accompanied tiptoe through the 1929 Andy Razaf standard “Gee\, Baby\, Ain’t I Good To You” made further famous in 1944 by one of Hightower’s greatest and earliest Jazz vocal heroes\, Nat “King” Cole. That one’ll make the women wiggle.

SUMMARY:Sunday\, November 27th: The Billy Thornton Band
DESCRIPTION:ONE SHOW ONLY! Billy Thornton was brought up in a family of musicians in South Georgia\, Tifton to be specific. In the midst of farms\, pickup trucks\, and country music\, Billy and his brothers went against the grain\, learning all of the alternative rock radio hits\, playing them in any coffee shop that would let them (there was only one). With their father\, they played jazz and smooth hits at restaurants and country clubs\, and at 17\, Billy fell in love with the acoustic jazz of the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is this passion for music from all genres that has kept Billy a top call sideman bassist in the southeast for the past 15 years. \n\n\n\nAs an upright bassist\, Billy has been known to “steal the show” with his rhythmic slapping\, melodic bowing\, and expert facility as a soloist. But now he has found his voice. Literally. \n\n\n\nAs a vocalist\, he aspires to honestly portray his emotion of the moment\, sharing his nostalgia for the music while incorporating a jazz musician’s sense of freedom of harmony and rhythm. Billy’s jazz-style arrangements of pop and rock songs from the past four decades mix easily with jazz standards\, surprising his listeners at times. His renditions of song from Nat King Cole to Britney Spears inspire audiences\, transporting familiar favorites to new places of delight. The song selection vacillates easily from contemplative to whimsy\, tender to raucous; all while maintaining integrity to self and the music.

SUMMARY:Saturday\, November 26th: Singer Mercy Myra
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIME: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. \n\n\n\nOne of the most enjoyable entertainers anywhere! \n\n\n\nDefinitely born to sing\, Mercy Myra is lauded as Kenya’s leading female R&B artist\, often viewed as a female pioneer in the Kenyan music scene. She made her mark in the industry with a string of hits from two successful CD releases: Taba Samu (2001) and Nyisri Malong’o (2003). Favorites like “I’m Gonna Fly”\, “Maneno”\, “Life”\, “Imagine” and “Tie Dero” topped the African music charts. International performances\, tours and guest appearances came next\, as well as numerous awards and accolades. She feels very close to her newest single\, “Back Home”\, which touches on the subject of missing her native Kenya. Its grounded yet airy percussions\, as well as a subtle bass line allow the song to have a natural feel\, as if evoking the four elements of nature: water\, air\, fire and earth.

SUMMARY:November 4th & 5th: The Curtis Lundy Trio Featuring Cyrus Chestnut *** SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! ***
DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY AND SATURDAY SHOWTIMES; 7:30pm and 9:30pm. \n\n\n\nCurtis Lundy is arguably one of the most prolific — in-demand bassists on the modern jazz scene — he is a disciple of the mainstream — straight ahead — hard bop school. \n\n\n\nHighly regarded for his robust\, lyrical\, ‘lead from the front’ approach to the acoustic bass — he delivers an unsurpassed brand of masterful excellence in performing standards\, originals and the American songbook. His fluid voicings and exceptional dexterity allow listeners to delve into a song — in any time signature — with an equal measure of challenge and enjoyment. \n\n\n\nBorn in 1963\, Cyrus Chestnut started his musical career at the age of three\, playing piano at the Mount Calvary StaR&Baptist Church at the age of six in his hometown of Baltimore\, MD. By age nine\, he was studying classical music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute in Baltimore. In the fall of 1981\, Cyrus began jazz education in Boston\, MA at the Berklee College of Music. In 1985\, he earned a degree in jazz composition and arranging. While at Berklee\, Chestnut was awarded the Eubie Blake Fellowship\, the Oscar Peterson\, Quincy Jones\, and Count Basie awards for exceptional performance standards at the college. Afterememberklee\, Cyrus began further honing his craft as a sid an with some of the legendary and leading musicians in the business. Some of these great people include; Jon Hendricks\, Michael Carvin\, Donald Harrison\, Terence Blanchard\, Wynton Marsalis\, Branford Marsalis\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, Freddie Hubbard\, Chick Corea\, Jimmy Heath\, James Moody\, Joe Williams\, Isaac Hayes\, Kathleen Battle\, Betty Carter and\, Dizzy Gillespie just to name a few. His association with Betty Carter\, which began in 1991 significantly affected his outlook and approach to music\, confirming his already iconoclastic instincts. Carter advised him to “take chances” and play things I’ve never heard\,” Chestnut says. As Cyrus was absorbing experiences as a sid an\, he was also developing as a leader\, recording and playing live around the world.  \n\n\n\nVictor Jones\, considered a visionary in today’s music business\, is a new breed of Drummer/Bandleader bringing new and exciting ideas to the world of jazz and world music. \n\n\n\nNo stranger to traditional or modern jazz\, Victor Jones started his career as a teen-age musician playing in local bands in his birthplace of Newark\, New Jersey and touring world-wide with Lou Donaldson. In his early twenties he toured the world with Stan Getz.  Later tours were with James Moody\, Michel Petrucciani\, Joe\, Olivia\, Stanley Clarke\,\, Phyllis Hyman\,\, Dizzy Gillespie and Chaka Khan as well as others. Victor played on the Grammy nominated EMI Korean recording\, Second Moon\, which won Record of the Year in 2006. Victor also was featured on the Best Latin Jazz recording in 2008 with Papo Vasquez. When asked about his greatest achievement he replied\,  “My greatest achievement in life was having five children with my wife Ane Jones.” Since 2003 he has been a Bandleader with his own World Music Band\, Cultur-Versy\, these days specializing in a new age type of music\, a mix of dance music\, hip-hop and electro pop.  \n\n\n\n*** SOLD OUT!! SUMMARY:Saturday\, October 29th: Jazz and R&B Singer Robin Latimore *** SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! ***
DESCRIPTION:Robin started singing as a little girl for devotion at her mother’s  revival services and in church. “When your mom is the minister\, you  don’t have a choice”. It was her parents who sparked her musical  interest. Her dad had a passion for traditional and contemporary  jazz as well as big band swing\, and her mom pushed gospel and  inspirational music. Together\, Robin developed a love for these  two genres more than any other. \n\n\n\n She is a graduate of The Fort Valley State College where her talent  was nurtured and requested highly. After winning several talent  competitions there\, people started noticing that this young lady  had talent. She joined her first band in 1988. The Darren Winters  Ensemble displayed a huge array of different music styles and this  was something that sparked Robin’s interest in singing more than  one type of music. She is no stranger to R & B\, Rap\, Country  Western\, and other alternative genres. She is heavily influenced by  her idols Phyliss Hyman\, Layla Hathaway\, Oleta Adams\, The Clark  Sisters\, Kim Burrell\, Maysa\, and Jennifer Holiday. \n\n\n\nWith her already hectic schedule\, she continues to flourish her self-made business\, Robin’s Singing Telegrams of Atlanta. “This business will always be my baby. The looks of disbelief\, the tears\, and the shock of the whole experience makes me want to do this forever!”

SUMMARY:Sunday\, October 2nd: Brazilian Artist Badi Assad
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:00PM AND 9:00PM. Born in 1966 in São João da Boa Vista\, São Paulo\, Brazil; daughter of Jorge (an amateur mandolin player) and Angelina (a singer); sister of Sérgio and Odair (Duo Assad). \n\n\n\nBadi Assad (pronounced Bah-djee Ah-sahj) was one of the truly unique talents to emerge from the world music scene during the 1990s. As the younger sister of the internationally acclaimed classical guitarists Sérgio and Odair Assad (known as Duo Assad)\, her musical roots are deep. Born in 1966 in São João da Boa Vista in the Brazilian state of São Paulo\, the first musical instrument Assad studied\, though rather informally\, was piano. She did not play guitar until she was 14 years old\, at first accompanying her father\, Jorge\, who played the bandolim (a stringed instrument akin to the mandolin and the guitarra portuguesa). \n\n\n\nOver the next four years\, Badi was taught by her older brothers and father; she also studied guitar at the University of Rio de Janeiro\, practicing 12 hours a day. During her teen years she entered guitar competitions. The turning point in her budding career came in 1984 when she decided to take up Brazilian music and began studying voice as well; for the latter she has credited her mother\, Angelina\, as being her greatest inspiration. In that same year Badi won the Concurso Jovens Instrumentistas (Young Instrumentalists Contest) in Rio de Janeiro. In 1985 she studied guitar at the Conservatory in Rio de Janeiro. \n\n\n\nBesides voice\, Badi also learned to use mouth and body percussion techniques that she combined with her guitar playing to create a unique style that set her apart from her famous brothers. In 1987 she entered the International Villa-Lobos Festival where she was named Best Brazilian Guitarist. By then she had worked with such musicians as Pat Metheny and Milton Nascimento. In 1988 she composed Antagonismus\, a solo piece of performance art in which she played guitar\, sang\, danced\, and acted. \n\n\n\nThe best-known song on Chameleon is a cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” About its inclusion\, Badi admitted in her ARTISTDirect online biography\, “[the song] represents the connection between me\, the guitar\, and the audience.” However not all critics were bowled over by her rendition of the song\, nor by Chameleon. Geoff Chapman of the Toronto Star wrote that her cover of the song was “tedious.” Of the album as a whole he described it as a blend of “pop\, Flamenco and neo-jazz in a cheerful kaleidoscope of moods that amounts to little more than happy songs and instrumental dexterity despite exotic backing combos and incendiary hype.”

The Atlanta-based musician\, songwriter\, and vocalist has consistently delighted fans and critics alike with her unique brand of engaging upbeat melodies and exhilarating flute playing. Six solo albums featuring tunes like the 2022 Billboard No.1 single release “Thrill Ride\,” as well as “Off the Cuff\,” “JJ’s Strut\,” “Reminiscing\,” “Jam It\,” “Early Arrival\,” “See You At The Get Down\,” and the Billboard No. 1 “Corey’s Bop\,” have burnished her reputation. What’s more\, Whiteside has become one of few women players to excel in the male-dominated instrumental sphere\, garnering eight consecutive Top Ten Billboard airplay singles to date. SUMMARY:Sunday\, September 25th: R&B/Jazz Singer Cleveland Jones and The Justin Varnes Quartet
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:00PM AND 9:00PM. It’s rare for the world to experience artistry that is so genuine\, so heartfelt…so captivating. Welcome to the world of singer/songwriter\, Cleveland P. Jones. He is the true embodiment of soul and jazz. When asked about his future in the music industry\, he stated “my mission is longevity\, not instant fame. I’ve learned by example and experience not to  rush a good thing.”  \n\n\n\nA humble native of South Carolina\, Jones started his artistic voyage under the tutelage of his mother and grandfather\, who were the lead singers in his church. A graduate of two prestigious institutions\, Morehouse College in Atlanta\, Georgia and Berklee College of Music in Boston\, Massachusetts\, Cleveland earned his degrees\, but also engulfed himself in the study of music. He instantly fell in love with soul and jazz. \n\n\n\nCleveland’s debut album\, Ace of Hearts\, was released in 2013\, and he was named SoulTracks.com’s New Artist of The Year as a result.  He also had the honor of opening for soul legend Chaka Khan and was the special guest of The Shadowboxers. His original song\, “Don’t Leave Me” from his debut album was a major feature in the 2016 Netflix release\, “ECHO PARK”. In 2017-2018\, Cleveland was privileged to tour many cities through out Eastern Europe as a solo artist. Currently\, Cleveland is expanding his brand by writing and recording soul\, jazz and house music and continues performing nationally and locally. Simply put\, Cleveland is committed to deliver unadulterated\, timeless music. He is well on his way to higher places\, but will always be grounded in his quest to heal souls one song at a time.
