SUMMARY:Friday\, November 3rd & Saturday\, November 4th: Jazz Guitar Master Russell Malone and His Quartet *** SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! ***
DESCRIPTION:“Obviously\, we are in the capable hands of a master. Absolutely fluid touch and beautiful integration between moving lines and harmonic cadences. The sound of the instrument is well-balanced throughout the entire register. The relaxed quality of everything that’s being played gives it such a warm feeling. To play that stuff is extremely hard. This is an absolute master\, the best of the best.”—Kurt Rosenwinkel\, responding to Russell Malone’s solo performance of “Remind Me” on Playground [MaxJazz\, 2004]\, in a DownBeat Blindfold Test. \n\n\n\n– – – – – – – – – – – – \n\n\n\nRussell Malone is one of the signature guitar players of his generation. The several recordings since 1992\, Malone is as well-known on the international circuit for helming a world-class quartet and trio as he is for his long-standing participation in Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio\, and his recent consequential contribution to the musical production of the likes of Sonny Rollins and Dianne Reeves\, who recruited Malone for his singular tone\, refined listening skills\, limitless chops\, and efflorescent imagination. \n\n\n\nIn all these circumstances\, Malone addresses the tradition on its own terms\, refracting the vocabularies and syntax of such heroes as Charlie Christian\, Chet Atkins\, George Van Eps\, Johnny Smith\, Wes Montgomery\, Grant Green\, Kenny Burrell\, Pat Martino\, and George Benson into an argot entirely his own. A master of all tempos\, a relentless swinger\, he spins his stories —in idioms ranging from the urban and downhome blues\, country\, gospel\, various corners of the American Songbook\, and hardcore jazz—with a soulful\, instantly recognizable instrumental voice\, and seasons them with sophisticated harmonies that are never “too hip for the room.”

SUMMARY:Friday\, October 27th: Carrie Bell Sings Gershwin
DESCRIPTION:Carrie has spent her life committed to the art of storytelling through music. \n\n\n\nHer career started as an artist\, performing as a triple threat – with a musical theater career earning her equity status doing professional shows across the country. She has also doubled down on a commitment to music and arts education\, running her own dance troupe and ultimately /helping hundreds of students learn to find their voice through vocal technique and coaching…which she still does today. \n\n\n\n A classically trained vocalist and pianist\, Carrie is also a talented songwriter who has always wanted to tell stories for music that remind us that life really is a stage and that music has the power to connect us by illuminating our shared journey through “this thing called life.” \n\n\n\nBut her first love\, the music that inspired her as a child and to this day is a staple in her performance roster is the music of George and Ira Gershwin! \n\n\n\nShe has previously taken the stage at The Velvet Note with the Justin Varnes Quartet for the Jazz Legend’s Series celebrating George Gershwin\, and is back by popular demand with her own selection of favorites and arrangements. \n\n\n\nLet Carrie take you on a journey through song through the eyes of a legendary catalogue of music.

SUMMARY:Saturday\, October 7th: Guitarist/Singer Niles Rivers *** SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! ***
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. \n\n\n\nThe story of Niles Levi Rivers begins in a Cleveland church\, where his father was a pastor.  Niles grew up playing bass and drums for the church choir\, and singing whenever he could.  As the youngest of five children\, Niles and his older brother were both introduced by their father to the music of Ahmad Jamal\, Chick Corea\, Stanley Clarke and John Pattitucci by the time they were ten years old.  “These were the guys I wanted to emulate\, they were my celebrities!” he says.  Niles’ father would provide musical instruments for his kids to play jazz around the house\, insisting that they practice each day before they could go outside.  Often their friends’ noses were pressed up against the living room windows\, watching them perform before they could come out to play. \n\n\n\nThroughout high school\, Niles played double bass in his school’s jazz combo.  Combo students wrote original music for themselves to perform\, including playing regularly in the assemblies and competitions at other schools.  Through these experiences and an encouraging band director\, Niles launched his journey as a singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who began using his voice as an instrument to speak life into the world. \n\n\n\nAfter graduation\, Niles began developing skills in pop music production\, inspired by a diverse range of artists from Prince to Bruce Hornsby and beyond.  “Shawn Colvin’s song ‘Polaroids’ showed me that you could sing songs to the world\, not just about love but about life. Storytelling.  That’s what made me want to sing life-giving songs that help someone\, somehow along the way.”  Today\, Niles’ mission is to share his gifts by telling life stories through the musicality of jazz influencing the popular music of his generation. \n\n\n\n\n\n*** SOLD OUT!! Get ready for a night of great music\, accompanied by New Orleans-inspired culinary selections and our new\, special fall cocktail! \n\n\n\nFrom a tender young age it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great. Together\, the four brothers and their patriarch Ellis\, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz. \n\n\n\nin 1995\, Marsalis ascended to the drum throne of a new group lead by virtuoso pianist and former sideman for Wynton Marsalis\, Marcus Roberts. Despite a demanding touring schedule with Roberts\, Marsalis furthered his educational goals by attending Loyola University in New Orleans\, as well as studying composition with notable classical composer\, Roger Dickerson. While Marsalis made appearances with such international jazz luminaries as Joe Henderson and Lionel Hampton\, he was visible on the New Orleans scene working with a diverse cross section of bands from Casa Samba (Brazilian)\, Neslort (jazz fusion) Summer Stages (children’s theater)\, Dr. Michael White (traditional jazz) and many others. \n\n\n\n2013 was a monumental year in which Marsalis released his next recording as a leader on vibes entitled “In a World of Mallets”. The album went to number 1 on the CMJ Radio Charts and also won an Offbeat Magazine award\, a New Orleans music magazine\, for best Contemporary Jazz Album. Marsalis also participated in a session produced by Bill Cosby by playing vibes for music used in Cosby’s Comedy Central special\, “Far From Finished”. There was even recordings from the drum kit as Marcus Roberts released three recordings that year. Two with Wynton Marsalis\, “Together Again – In the Studio” and “Together Again – Live in Concert”\, and the ambitious original trio suite from Roberts\, “From Rags to Rhythm”. \n\n\n\nWith each passing year Jason Marsalis continues to grow and develop as both a composer and performer. With a fire in his heart and a passion for the music\, his will to swing has never been more resolute. The maturity and the command he possesses over his music is clearly evident to those who have heard or seen him.
