SUMMARY:Friday\, August 25th and Saturday\, August 26th: The Eric Essix Group
DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY and SATURDAY SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. During his first decade as an artist\, Eric recorded four well received albums on Nova Records\, his own label (S6 Jazz Records) and Ben Tankard’s Spirit Jazz\, and earned a degree from Berklee College of Music. In 1998\, he reached an exciting plateau when he was signed by legendary Warner Brothers Vice President Ricky Shultz to his new Warner distributed label\, Zebra Records. Schultz\, who helped develop the careers of contemporary jazz greats Pat Metheny\, Al Jarreau\, David Sanborn\, Larry Carlton\, Fourplay\, Joshua Redman and The Yellowjackets\, took a liking to Essix’s latest self-produced album Small Talk and gave the guitarist his first taste of national promotion and radio exposure. Eric’s single “For Real” was on the airplay charts for 25 weeks\, reaching the Top 5 on several. Southbound\, the guitarist’s second album on the label\, included a re-imagining of the Brook Benton classic “Rainy Night in Georgia\,” which likewise became a radio hit in 2001.   \n\n\n\nListen to Eric perform my favorite of his hits\, his version of “Wichita Lineman”. \n\n\n\nSince launching his own indie label Essential Recordings in 2002\, Eric has scored numerous  radio hits\, starting with “Sweet Tea” from 2004’s Somewhere in Alabama and continuing with “Shuttlesworth Drive\,” a musical tribute to the great civil rights pioneer\, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth\, which spent 7 consecutive weeks at #1 on Smoothjazz.com and over 20 weeks in the Top 10; “New Focus\,” which reached #27 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Songs chart; and “Foot Soldiers\,” which hit #1 on the Smoothjazz.com Indie Chart and #9 on the Top Fifty chart among numerous other industry airplay lists. Five years after its release\, “Foot Soldiers” remains in regular rotation on SiriusXM Watercolors.   \n\n\n\nIn the late 2000s\, Eric expanded his reach in the contemporary urban jazz realm\, touring and performing with some of the top names in the genre\, including Jeff Lorber\, Gerald Albright\, Ronnie Laws\, Phil Perry\, Boney James\, Everette Harp\, Peabo Bryson\, Marcus Miller\, Eric Darius\, Alex Bugnon\, Marcus Johnson\, Peter White\, Mindi Abair and others. His love for the genre and his deep connections therein inspired him to launch the Preserve Jazz Festival\, the only festival in Birmingham exclusively devoted to jazz performers. As Founder and Executive Producer for ten years\, Eric invited headliners like Brian Culbertson\, Kirk Whalum\, Boney James and Jeff Lorber to perform.     \n\n\n\nThough Eric admits his style is very different from that of Wes Montgomery\, the legendary guitarist is another major influence. Ten years before the Jaco experience\, Eric’s dad played Montgomery’s 1966 album California Dreaming for him. “I had never heard anyone play jazz interpretations of pop melodies until then\,” Eric says. “I could hear that the guitar was actually “singing” the melody. That’s when I realized jazz was the natural style of music for an instrument to achieve the same emotions that a vocal could. I started playing guitar two years later and right from the start tried to make the guitar sing.”   \n\n\n\n“The most interesting part of this musical journey has been observing my own growth as an artist\,” Eric says. “My mindset has shifted dramatically and is light years away from when I was a young guitarist first making records\, focusing on being flashy and showing people how fast I could play. In those days\, it was all about speed and lots of notes. As I have matured as a musician and as a person\, I’d like to think I have found my niche as a composer and songwriter as well as becoming a better guitar player.”  \n\n\n\n$39.

DESCRIPTION:ONE SHOW ONLY!!! The Velvet Note launches its October shows with an exclusive performance starring Vibraphonist Jason Marsalis and his band! Get ready for a night of great music\, accompanied by New Orleans-inspired culinary selections and our new\, special fall cocktail! \n\n\n\nFrom a tender young age it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great. Together\, the four brothers and their patriarch Ellis\, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz. \n\n\n\nin 1995\, Marsalis ascended to the drum throne of a new group lead by virtuoso pianist and former sideman for Wynton Marsalis\, Marcus Roberts. Despite a demanding touring schedule with Roberts\, Marsalis furthered his educational goals by attending Loyola University in New Orleans\, as well as studying composition with notable classical composer\, Roger Dickerson. While Marsalis made appearances with such international jazz luminaries as Joe Henderson and Lionel Hampton\, he was visible on the New Orleans scene working with a diverse cross section of bands from Casa Samba (Brazilian)\, Neslort (jazz fusion) Summer Stages (children’s theater)\, Dr. Michael White (traditional jazz) and many others. \n\n\n\n2013 was a monumental year in which Marsalis released his next recording as a leader on vibes entitled “In a World of Mallets”. The album went to number 1 on the CMJ Radio Charts and also won an Offbeat Magazine award\, a New Orleans music magazine\, for best Contemporary Jazz Album. Marsalis also participated in a session produced by Bill Cosby by playing vibes for music used in Cosby’s Comedy Central special\, “Far From Finished”. There was even recordings from the drum kit as Marcus Roberts released three recordings that year. Two with Wynton Marsalis\, “Together Again – In the Studio” and “Together Again – Live in Concert”\, and the ambitious original trio suite from Roberts\, “From Rags to Rhythm”. \n\n\n\nWith each passing year Jason Marsalis continues to grow and develop as both a composer and performer. With a fire in his heart and a passion for the music\, his will to swing has never been more resolute. The maturity and the command he possesses over his music is clearly evident to those who have heard or seen him.

SUMMARY:Saturday\, October 7th: Guitarist/Singer Niles Rivers *** SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! SOLD OUT!! ***
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: 7:30PM AND 9:30PM. \n\n\n\nThe story of Niles Levi Rivers begins in a Cleveland church\, where his father was a pastor.  Niles grew up playing bass and drums for the church choir\, and singing whenever he could.  As the youngest of five children\, Niles and his older brother were both introduced by their father to the music of Ahmad Jamal\, Chick Corea\, Stanley Clarke and John Pattitucci by the time they were ten years old.  “These were the guys I wanted to emulate\, they were my celebrities!” he says.  Niles’ father would provide musical instruments for his kids to play jazz around the house\, insisting that they practice each day before they could go outside.  Often their friends’ noses were pressed up against the living room windows\, watching them perform before they could come out to play. \n\n\n\nThroughout high school\, Niles played double bass in his school’s jazz combo.  Combo students wrote original music for themselves to perform\, including playing regularly in the assemblies and competitions at other schools.  Through these experiences and an encouraging band director\, Niles launched his journey as a singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who began using his voice as an instrument to speak life into the world. \n\n\n\nAfter graduation\, Niles began developing skills in pop music production\, inspired by a diverse range of artists from Prince to Bruce Hornsby and beyond.  “Shawn Colvin’s song ‘Polaroids’ showed me that you could sing songs to the world\, not just about love but about life. Storytelling.  That’s what made me want to sing life-giving songs that help someone\, somehow along the way.”  Today\, Niles’ mission is to share his gifts by telling life stories through the musicality of jazz influencing the popular music of his generation. \n\n\n\n\n\n*** SOLD OUT!!
