Meet Our Chefs

At The Velvet Note, we believe that two heads are better than one. Meet the heads and heart of our outstanding culinary program: Chefs Colin McGowan and Jimmy Carter.   Check out this week’s menu HERE.

Chef Colin McGowan started out working in restaurants in his early teens as a dishwasher and busboy. After a few years of waiting tables, he realized that his true passion was for food and cooking. Colin went on to work in several top-ten restaurants around Atlanta. In 2017, he was invited to take a position in Thomas Keller’s three-Michelin-star restaurant “Per Se”, which he declined in order to stay close to home and allow his fiancé to finish her final year in college. Upon his return, he accepted a position as Sous Chef for the Atlanta Hawks. Two years later, he launched his supper club “14Seats” , a fine dining tasting menu that has recently won “Best New Restaurant” by ATL Eats. Beginning in November 2019, Chef Mcgowan will bring his private dining events to the beautiful ambiance of The Velvet Note.

Jimmy Carter began cooking in the restaurant industry when he was 12, both in the Alpharetta and Atlanta markets. While still in high school, he worked under the guidance of Atlanta’s top chefs at the time, including Certified Master Chef Kevin J. Walker (Cherokee Country Club) and BRAVO’s Top Chef winner Richard Blaise.

After graduating high school, Chef Carter moved to Charleston, South Carolina and started diving into the Charleston Brigade. He eventually worked his way up to Executive Chef of some well-known restaurants in Charleston. Chef Carter has returned to his hometown of Alpharetta in order to launch an extraordinary culinary partnership with his childhood friend Colin McGowan, and to showcase great locally-sourced food with his southern coastal cuisine, all for the guests of The Velvet Note.
