Recently awarded by Downbeat Magazine, The Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra (RYJO) was established in 2011 by Dr. Gordon Vernick.  The RYJO big band and jazz combos perform music that is historically significant as well as challenging.  In rehearsals, RYJO stresses personal responsibility, musicianship, teamwork, and artistic expression. RYJO is an audition-based high school group that exposes students to the full spectrum of jazz music and education.  The students receive outstanding instruction in jazz performance, jazz history, and jazz improvisation from our faculty at Georgia State University.  The combos are perform in the metro Atlanta area.  The young musicians are treated as professionals and through their time with RYJO, develop into astounding musicians.

Over RYJO’s lifetime, many of the graduating high school students go on to become music majors in college and have attended the University of North Texas, New England Conservatory of Music, Georgia State University, The University of Georgia, Kennesaw State University, Florida State University, The Julliard School, and the Berklee College of Music. The Rialto Honors Combo won the national award for “Best Jazz Group” in the 2019 Downbeat Student Music Awards.
